Monday Morning Smile XXXXV – Tulips and all that

Welcome back to the Monday Morning Smile and its new location !!

It Spring! and you know what that means…..Spring is when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of Romance.    Riiiiigggghhhtt….couldn’t say that with a straight face. Spring is actually when a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of Golf, hockey playoffs, and outdoor barbeques. Ah yes, that sounds about right.

My son and I hit the driving range this weekend, had the first spring baseball practice, and had delicious BBQ’d hamburgers for supper. Then settled down Sunday night to watch “the Gordie Howe Story” on TV. Does it get any better than that? I’m a lucky man. If you don’t know Gordie Howe then a pox on your home.

Given that my wife will be subjected to hockey playoffs over the next month or two, I suspect flowers are in order.

I’m thinking Tulips. They look great, they mark the true beginning of spring, and add vibrant colour.
tulips  What do you think? Are tulips o.k.? Any great ideas on how to keep the squirrels away?

A tulip bulb to a squirrel is like a double chocolate donut to yours truly – irresistible!

BTW, Tulips have a very cool history

Back in the 1600’s the price of a tulip reached ‘bubble’ like proportions.  Think the tech bubble of 2000 was bad? Think the U.S. housing bubble in 2009 was bad? The grand-daddy of all was the 1929 Stock Market Crash that led to the Depression of the 1930’s.

That was nothing!

The Price run-up (and then crash) of tulips in the Netherlands in 1637 was unbelievable.

The cost of one Viceroy Tulip bulb would be almost 20 times the annual wage of a skilled worker !!!

This is such a well documented Price bubble that it is often required instruction in business schools. It nearly brought down the Dutch government of the day apparently.

Oh those crazy Dutch!
